  • Moisture Content: The moisture content must be ≤ 5% (loss on drying) to ensure the stability of the product and to inhibit the growth of microorganisms.
  • Color: A yellow to dark orange-brown powder that is typical of marigold flower extract, depending on the concentration of lutein and the method of processing.
  • Ash Content: The total ash content should usually be ≤ 5%, and the amount of acid insoluble ash should be ≤ 1%.
  • Lutein Content: The carotenoid compounds that are responsible for the activity are mainly lutein (with naturally occurring zeaxanthin) and are usually present at 5%–20% by weight or as per the buyer’s requirement.

Processing of Marigold Extract

  • The marigold flowers that were chosen, cleaned, and dried are ground and made into less granular form.
  • To get the extract that is rich in lutein, the extraction process is done by utilizing the solvents that are food-grade.
  • The extract is subjected to filtration and is then concentrated using the method of vacuum.
  • The concentrated extract is then converted into a free-flowing powder through either spray drying or vacuum drying techniques.
  • The powder is then made to contain the necessary lutein content by doing standardization and subjected to quality testing.
